About Songhurst Guitars 'The Rock Slide'

Some words from the inventor/founder, Mark Morse;
"While playing the club circuit in the late seventies, I was always less than satisfied with the guitar slides available at music stores. It always bugged me how slides would pinch the inside of my 2nd knuckle. While home on a break I decided to grind out the cutaway section of a chrome slide I had at the time. It immediately made a big difference in the comfort & stability. This got me thinking some years later that the concept could be taken much further.While the cutaway was convenient the interior was still “pipe like”. My research led me to a creative metal manufacturing company in Spokane, Washington that utilized computer driven Swiss screw machine technology. I decided to utilize CNC and CAD drawings to take my project to the next level. Once the design was finalized and patented, we loaded our design into the computers and The Rock Slide was born."

If you've followed the Home of Tone for a while, you'll know that I've always had a nice selection of quality guitar slides and it feels great to also add The Rock Slide to my line-up! These slides feature some very unique design points from cool finishes to the tapered internal diameter, finger rest & knuckle cutaway all aimed to help technique and comfort. 

The Rhett Shull Signature moulded glass slide

The Moulded Glass Rock Slides feature all the great design elements that made the original brass Rock Slides so popular. That is they still feature a knuckle cutaway, finger rest and a unique tapered interior which are all quite unique features for glass slides. In addition to all of the above, Rhett's custom model also features a cool satin finger rest and a sandblasted logo.

At the opening the walls are 4mm thick and by the end of the slide, where the fingertip needs additional grip and mass, they are 6-8mm.  These thick walls are around double what you would find on a typical glass wine bottleneck slide.  If you like the features on a rock slide, but want something much more lightweight than brass, this might be a great option for you. They are a little longer than the brass Rock Slides, they are both lighter and faster, making them an excellent choice for electric guitarists. Please note that with their reduced mass, these slides are not perhaps intended for use on acoustic guitars. If you play acoustic or resonator, I highly recommend checking out the stunning handblown glass slides by Diamond Bottlenecks who has spent decades making quality glass slides for use on acoustic instruments.


Size

The RS signature is only available in his spec - 
Medium - 19.5mm ID (Ring Size 9-11) - 60mm length

Rock Slide slides fit the same across all materials. If a small glass fits you, so will a small ceramic or small brass and on and on. Not all situations and fingers are the same and there is also a degree of personal preference that can’t always be figured out with a measurement.  For the majority of customers, pinky finger will take a small slide. Ring finger will take a medium or Large slide. If you have very large hands, medium usually works for the pinky and XL for the ring. 

Method 1: Jewelry Store

The most accurate way to size your finger is to stop by your local jeweler and get your ring size which should be free if you ask nicely! and takes about 90 seconds. 

Method 2: Measure with Wrenches

If you have access to a set of Metric or USA box wrenches you can very quickly measure your finger. To measure any finger size, use the OPEN END of the wrench. DO NOT use the ring end of the wrench as it could get stuck on your finger.  Find the size that slides over the large knuckle snugly like how a ring fits.  If it goes over your knuckle without touching the skin then try the next size down.

How Should a Rock Slide Guitar Slide Fit?

Ideally Rock Slides should fit snug enough that you can point your finger straight down at the ground without the slide falling off.  The proper fit is for the slide to stop at the large knuckle creating a 2/3 finger slide.  This allows you for bending of the finger with the slide on which makes, playing, fretting and chording much easier.

For online ordering and dispatch - In stock, non made to order items are processed and dispatched 3 days a week; Monday, Wednesday & Friday.
For orders that are placed on a Monday, Wednesday & Friday I have an order cut off time of 12:00GMT to allow me chance to process, pack and dispatch your order same day.
For non dispatch days (Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday & Thursday) there is no order cut-off time, and these will be processed, packed and shipped on the closest following dispatch day.
