Rush Amps - Rush Pepbox 2.0

About/History

I would like to introduce you to the authentic and authorised reissue of the legendary RUSH PEPBOX®!
One of the first wave of guitar effects pedals with the new “Fuzz” sound, designed and built in London in 1965 by the creator Pepe Rush. The RUSH PEPBOX ® was used by a number of leading groups in the 60’s including The Beatles (who used one at Abbey Road during the recording of Revolver) The Shadows, The Animals and others.
An iconic and historic pedal that I am now very proud to stock here at James' Home of Tone.

Unfortunately, Pepe Rush passed away in late 2018 but his daughter, Lucy, is carrying on building them. Lucy had been working with her father for a number of years and wanted to carry on with the work they did together to keep his legacy alive. An honour to have these really cool recreations, made by the same family as the original, here in stock at the Home of Tone and would like to thank Lucy for having me on board to represent her great work.

Controls/Sounds

There’s no doubt right from first plug in, your proverbial time machine has joined you to experience some of that unique mid 60s early Fuzz circuit tone. With your guitars volume pot on full, I’d describe the Pepbox as having a rather compressed vintage fuzz attack (think spirit in the sky!) and a surprisingly (to me, at least) broad range of gain via the ‘Pep’ control. From a little sizzle to absolutely soaring, feedback inducing aggressive and spitty fuzz. Believe me, even at low office friendly volumes, this thing was soaring into controlled feedback with ease. Each region of the varied Pep/gain control capturing it’s own unique response from the input of your guitar too, by that I mean pick attack or type of pickups for example influencing it. Must admit though, couldn't help but keep it dimed and bask in that mega fuzz!
It cleans up almost immediately at the top end of your guitar’s volume, so if that's your thing, you'll find the Pepbox will deliver that effect.

Built on a copy of the original printed circuit board using germanium transistors to capture the unique original sound.

This is the 2.0 Pepbox, a more modern day friendly enclosure shape/size to suit pedalboard players.
  • Wedge-shaped welded steel enclosure in a silver Hammerite finish – a little smaller than the original Rush Pepbox to fit into tighter spaces
  • Runs off of a power supply jack. (9 volts center negative) but also runs off a 9volt battery like the original
  • Front-mounted input, output, and power jacks.
  • White on black engraved labeling hand engraved on the original engraving machine used on the very first Pepboxes from the 60’s.
  • The PEP and LEVEL controls are moved to the face of the enclosure for ease of visibility.
  • Same germanium circuit with the same original Rush Pepbox sound
  • With a warm white LED that shows when FUZZ IS ON. True bypass when it is off.
It comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.
